The Presidential Candidate of the People’s Democratic Party,PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, yesterday told the Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, to resign for the perceived failure of the February 25 elections.
Carpeting Yakubu for blaming the failure of the polls on commission field officials, Atiku, in a statement signed by his Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, on Sunday, said that being the team leader, the INEC Chairman ought to quit the post.
Yakubu, during a meeting with the Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) on Saturday, noted that several issues dogged the conduct and outcome of the presidential and national assembly elections.
He vowed that officials responsible for the infractions would be excluded from handling the gubernatorial and state houses of assembly elections which is holding next Saturday, March 11.
Yakubu added that those officials indicted would face disciplinary actions.
However, Atiku, in the statement signed by Shaibu, said: “Prof. Yakubu should be man enough to own up to his failure.
“A fish rots from the head down, and that is what has happened at INEC.
“Rather than suspend any staff, the INEC Chairman is the one that needs to step aside as his first act of contrition.”
