In the middle of club football, international breaks happen, and players are expected to represent their countries in continental tournaments.
Oftentimes, some players who go home in full fitness return to their clubs with an injury or the other.
The recent break – as of September 2024 – is no exception as a bunch of players have now sustained injuries while representing their countries.
This article shall take a look at them:
Eder Militao
The Brazilian’s injury has further compounded Real Madrid’s injury woes after Tchuameni, Ferland Mendy, Dani Ceballos and Eduardo Camavinga are all out due to injuries. Real Madrid are furious at the Brazil national team for not keeping the defender away from a minor thigh injury after he sustained an injury in training.
Vitinha
The PSG’s midfield sensation sustained an injury when he was playing against Croatia. Luis Enrique will, no doubt, be disappointed as the further results will show the extent of the Portuguese’s absence. Vitinha did not feature in Portugal’s win versus Scotland three days later.
Ricardo Calafiori
Arsenal’s fans will not forgive Ousmane Dembele for his careless fall on Ricardo Calafiori when Italy and France met last week. The Italian is Arsenal’s new defensive prodigy but will not see him in action for a while now until he is fit.
Warren Zaire-Emery
One of Europe’s brightest and youngest players, Zaire-Emery will be on the sideline for a while after sustaining a calf injury at the end of the match versus Italy, although he did not start the match. He withdrew from the squad and did not feature in France’s win over Belgium some days after.
Another huge blow for Paris Saint-Germain.
Niclas Fulkrug
Fulkrug signed for English side West Ham United from Borussia Dortmund this summer and went ahead to represent his country, Germany, this month. He started for Germany in their 5 – 0 humiliation of Hungary but was withdrawn from the squad that played a 2 – 2 draw at Netherlands due to a calf injury. Fulkrug will miss West Ham’s Saturday clash with Fulham.
Ezri Konsa
Konsa’s evening ended in the 60th minute while he was on international duty with England. The Aston Villa man strained his ankle while trying to win back possession, but decided to play on still. A few moments later, he asked to be subbed off and will miss the Aston Villa meeting versus Everton during the weekends.
It’s a huge blow for Unai Emery who is already dealing with a plethora of injuries this season.
Harvey Elliot
Liverpool will be without the services of England midfielder, Harvey Elliot, for a while. Elliot suffered a discomfort during training with the U21 team and further results have shown that it’s a broken foot.
Elliot, who has only played seven minutes under Arne Slot this season, will be sidelined for a month, at least.
Martin Odegaard
Arsenal have lost Martin Odegaard to injury and will look forward to playing without him for a while. The Norwegian limped off in the 67th minute after a tackle from Austria’s Christoph Baumgartner.
Results have shown that Odegaard has twisted his ankle and will not feature for the next three weeks or thereabouts.
Nathan Ake
In an intense match against Germany, all Netherlands defenders had a lot of work and the effect showed on Nathan Ake.
The Manchester City man went down unchallenged in the 39th minute of that encounter with a seeming muscle injury as he was seen clutching his thighs. He was afterward stretchered off amidst tears.
