An Abuja–Kaduna-bound train derailed on Tuesday at about 11:09 a.m., the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) confirmed the incident.
The corporation said the incident occurred at KM 49 between Kubwa Station and Asham Station while the Kaduna-bound service was in motion.
In a statement signed by the NRC Managing Director, Kayode Opeifa, the corporation said emergency rescue teams, medical personnel, and nearby hospitals were immediately mobilised.
Opeifa added that security operatives had been deployed to the scene to ensure the safety of passengers.
“The full complement of security is already on the ground, while efforts are ongoing to move all passengers on the train back to Abuja safely,” the statement read.
Several cabins overturned in the derailment, sparking panic among passengers as they scrambled to safety. Eyewitnesses described the atmosphere as “chaotic” as travellers rushed to disembark.
The Abuja–Kaduna rail line, one of the busiest in the country, has faced repeated setbacks in recent years.
In March 2022, armed men attacked a passenger train on the route, killing and abducting scores of travellers in one of the deadliest incidents in Nigeria’s rail history.
Last week, the NRC also confirmed a technical fault on the same corridor after one of the train’s wheels developed a hot axle near Rigasa Station in Kaduna.
