The Super Eagles of Nigeria started their campaign at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with a slim 2-1 win over Tanzania.
The Super Eagles were in ascendancy from the blast of the whistle, but Tanzania put up a resolute display at the back.
West Bromwich Albion defender Semi Ajayi gave Nigeria the lead nine minutes before the break.
Ajayi nodded home from Alex Iwobi’s superb cross from inside the box.
Samuel Chukwueze nearly doubled Nigeria’s lead just before the break, but his goal-bound effort was tipped over by Tanzania goalkeeper Zuberi Foba.
Victor Osimhen had a goal chalked off for offside two minutes after the break.
Tanzania equalised in the 50th minute through Charles M’Mombwa.
The Super Eagles regained the lead two minutes later through Ademola Lookman.
Lookman fired home superbly from inside the box after he was set up by Alex Iwobi.
Eric Chelle’s men failed to double their lead despite a couple of chances.
They will face the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia in their next game on Saturday.
