AFN Replaces Brume, Onwuzurike, Places Amusan In Main Entry For Budapest 2023

Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has removed the names of Godson Brume, Udodi Onwuzurike from the list of athletes for the 2023 World Championships, which will begin in Budapest, Hungary, on August 19, The Guardian reports.
According to the medium, U.S.-based speed star, Onwuzurike and Brume were left out of the squad.
The medium quoted the AFN Technical Director, Samuel Onikeku, to have said that Tobi Amusan, the World Record holder in the 100m hurdles, is already in the main entry list sent to World Athletics.
“We had sent Tobi Amusan’s name in our main entry list to WA in case she is cleared by the Athletes Integrity Unit (AIU). Tobi is training for the World Championships, and we pray she gets the clearance to compete for Team Nigeria,” the medium quoted Onikeku to have said.
Recall that Amusan was conspicuously missing from Team Nigeria’s list of 26 athletes to the World Athletics Championships, which was released by AFN on Tuesday, 8 August, 2023
Brume had pulled out of the championships two days ago, citing health issues, while Onwuzurike failed to recover in time from the injury he sustained at the NCAA outdoor championships in the United States.
The AFN has replaced them with the duo of Nicholas Fakorode and Kalington Anunagba.
The list has 11 male and 15 female athletes for the championships in Budapest, Hungary.
Top on the list is world silver medalist, long jumper, Ese Brume. U.S.-based Itshekiri Usheoritshe, Favour Ashe and Alaba Akintola also made the list.
Others are Seye Ogunlewe, Nathaniel Ezekiel, Nathaniel Samson, Dubem Nwachukwu, Chidi Okezie, Samuel Ogazi and shot putter, Enekwechi Chukwuebuka.
On the women’s list to Budapest are Rosemary Chukwuma, Ofili Favour, Faith Okwose, Eyakpobeyan Justina, Success Umukoro, Uko Nse Imaobong, Patience George, Ella Onojuvwevwo, Oke Opeyemi, Ruth Usoro, Amaechi Obiageri Pamela, Anumba Ashley, Onyekwere Chioma and Olatoye Oyesade.
