The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for Lagos State. Mr. Jimi Agbaje, has commiserated with the government and people of Sokoto State over the death of Nigeria’s Second Republic President, Alhaji Shehu Shagari.
Jimi Agbaje said the elder statesman’s demise at this time was painful.
In a statement by his by his Director of Media and Publicity, Felix Oboagwina, on Saturday, Agbaje said a mighty tree has fallen in the forest.”
Describing Shagari as one of the country’s most historical personalities, Agbaje said he would be remembered for being a humble and unassuming politician.
According to the PDP candidate, it was a pity that following the four years that Shagari ruled Nigeria and the aborting of his regime in 1983, the country’s fortunes had been on the downward spiral.
Agbaje said Shagari’s amiable and fraternal relationship with his Vice President, the Late Dr. Alex Ekwueme, was a model that, if replicated nationwide, would bestow Nigeria with its elusive unity.
He prayed that God would give the family, the Sokoto people and the country the fortitude to bear the great loss.
Shehu Shagari died yesterday at the national hospital in Abuja at the age of 93.
