Prominent activist Aisha Yesufu has dumped the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as she repositions ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Yesufu also declared her intention to contest for the Federal Capital Territory senatorial seat under the platform of the NDC.
She announced her decision in a statement posted on her X handle on Wednesday, linking the move to her continued support for former presidential candidate Peter Obi.
Yesufu wrote: “The next couple of days will define the future of this nation.
“This deeper understanding is why I resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as I follow the leadership of HE Peter Obi, who today embodies the hope and aspiration of a Nigeria that works.”
She said her earlier decision to support Obi influenced her move to the ADC and explained that joining the NDC was part of fulfilling that commitment.
Yesufu added: “When I give my word, I keep it. My decision to support HE Peter Obi first led me to the ADC. To continue to honour the promise I am joining the NDC.”
Confirming her political ambition, she wrote: “This time I am joining the NDC not just as a member but as one running for the FCT Senatorial seat.”
The activist also said she had concluded all responsibilities within the ADC before leaving the party.
She stated: “I was fortunate to work with great and amazing people whose goal was a better country.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to have served as sub-committee chair, deputy committee chair, and secretary at various levels.”
Yesufu described her experience in the party as invaluable and appreciated members for their cooperation and support.
Yesufu’s defection comes amid growing political realignments within the opposition, following the movement of Peter Obi and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso from the ADC to the NDC
