Defending champions Argentina staged a remarkable comeback from two goals down to edge past Egypt 3-2 on Tuesday, booking their spot in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Egypt made the brighter start at the Atlanta Stadium in the United States of America and took the lead in the 15th minute through defender Yasser Ibrahim.
Argentina had an immediate opportunity to restore parity five minutes later, but captain Lionel Messi saw his penalty in the 20th minute saved by goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir.
The missed spot-kick was Messi’s fourth failed penalty in FIFA World Cup history, excluding penalty shoot-outs.
Egypt doubled their advantage in the 67th minute when forward Mostafa Ziko found the net after a Video Assistant Referee review confirmed the goal.
Argentina began their fightback in the 79th minute as defender Cristian Romero pulled one back.
Messi then levelled the contest four minutes later, scoring from open play in the 83rd minute for his eighth goal of the tournament.
The comeback was completed in the second minute of stoppage time when midfielder Enzo Fernández struck the winner to hand Argentina a dramatic 3-2 victory.
The result sends Argentina into the quarter-finals, where they will face the winner of the Round of 16 clash between Switzerland national football team and Colombia national football team in Kansas City on July 11.
