Barring a last-minute reversal, Atiku Abubakar, a former Vice President, is anticipated to formally enroll as a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Monday.
Daily Trust reports that top aides confirmed that all arrangements have been completed for Atiku to collect his ADC membership card at Jada Ward 1 in Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
Earlier on Sunday, Atiku met with the Adamawa ADC leadership in Yola. During the meeting, he clearly hinted that he was ready to join the party and described the ADC as the new political home for his supporters across the country.
He told party members, “In Nigeria as a whole, there is a new political movement, is it not so? Today, the new movement has taken us to where? To the ADC. So, the people of Adamawa and Nigeria, our new party is ADC, and our new leaders in Adamawa are here seated.”
Atiku then asked his supporters if they would welcome him into the party, and they responded with a loud “Yes.”
He continued, “After that, on Monday, I will be officially in the ADC. Before now, I was not in; you were there before me. Will you accept me?”
He added, “May God allow us to witness Monday. It is tomorrow; we are hopeful to meet tomorrow.”
There had been doubts about how committed Atiku and former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, were to the ADC. These doubts grew after the opposition coalition they led adopted the ADC in July for the 2027 presidential election.
Their absence during the unveiling of the party’s new national secretariat last week also raised concerns about unity within the party.
