Be University Ambassadors – FUNAAB VC Urges New FPY Students

By Olaoye Oyewole & Wuraola Dada
The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, on September 1, 2025, urged students of the 2025/2026 Academic Session Farm Practical Year (FPY) to see themselves as worthy ambassadors both within and beyond the University.
The Vice-Chancellor made this call at the opening session of the Orientation Programme organised by the Centre for Community-Based Farming Scheme (COBFAS), themed “Agriculture in the Modern World: Navigating the New Reality and Complexity.” The Vice-Chancellor, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development), Prof. Olawale Dairo, described the FPY as a unique 12-month intensive programme that distinguishes FUNAAB from other universities in Nigeria.
The Vice-Chancellor charged the students to embrace discipline, creativity, and resilience, even as he encouraged them to contribute meaningfully to the University’s enduring legacy. He further advised them to embrace the programme with dedication, stressing that it offers a rare opportunity to acquire practical skills, sharpen their entrepreneurial mindset, and translate classroom theories into real-life experiences.
In his lecture titled, “FUNAAB Ambassador: Your Roles,” the Dean, Student Affairs Division, Prof. Festus Adeosun, emphasised the need for FPY students to uphold the University’s values and represent FUNAAB with integrity wherever they are posted.
Similarly, the Director of COBFAS, Prof. Kazeem Bello, in a paper titled “Do it Yourself,” charged the students to maximise the training by learning, working, and earning from the 12-month programme. He highlighted that assessment would cover punctuality, assignments, fieldwork, logbook entries, and examinations, warning that negligence could lead to failure.
Also speaking, the Director of SIWES, Prof. Oluwatoyin Afolabi, represented by Mr. Essien Emmanuel, advised the students to be diligent in their online registration and documentation processes during the computerisation of their records, stressing the importance of following official guidelines.
Other speakers included: Mrs. Oluwatoyin Dawodu, Head, SERVICOM Unit and former Acting Registrar (represented by Mrs. Gladys Solanke); Dr. Oluseyi Anjorin, Director, Health Centre (represented by Dr. Nasiru Oyelekan); Dr. Emmanuel Bankole, Ag. Director, Directorate of University Farms (represented by Dr. Tunrayo Adekunle), and Mr. Olugbenga Fasina, Deputy Director (Farms). Others were Mr. Bolarinwa Peter, Assistant Chief Environmental Officer (represented by Mr. Adeogun Ayelabola) and Comrade Olamilekan Michael, President, Students’ Union Government.
