Beer Does Not Cause Pot Belly –Expert

Beer according to Wikipedia, is one of the oldest beverages humans have produced, dating back to at least the fifth millennium BC and recorded in the written history of ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia.

 Beer, like beverages were independently developed throughout the world soon after a tribe or culture had domesticated cereal. It was reveal that beer was produced as far back as about 7,000 years ago in what is today Iran. This discovery reveals one of the earliest known uses of fermentation and is the earliest evidence of brewing to date. In Mesopotamia, the oldest evidence of beer is believed to be a 6,000-year-old Sumerian tablet depicting people drinking a beverage through reed straws from a communal bowl.

Today, the brewing industry is a global business, consisting of several dominant international and multinational companies and many thousands of smaller producers ranging from brewpubs to regional breweries. More than 133 billion liters (35 billion gallons) are sold per year; producing total global revenues of $294.5 billion (£147.7 billion) in 2006.

Where does beer come from?

Beer is said to come from Mesopotamia (Ancient Iraq), early evidence of beer is a 3900-year-old Sumerian poem honoring Ninkasi, the patron goddess of brewing, which contains the oldest surviving beer recipe, describing the production of beer from barley via bread.

What did they drink in the middle ages?

In medieval England, ale was an alcoholic drink made from grain, water, and fermented with yeast. The difference between medieval ale and beer was that beer also used hops as an ingredient. Virtually everyone drank ale.

Albertus Magnus (1193-1280) was said to be the first to clearly describe the process which made possible the manufacture of distilled spirits (Patrick, 1952, p. 29). Knowledge of the process began to spread slowly among monks, physicians and alchemists, who were interested in distilled alcohol as a cure for ailments.

Beer is made from barley, water, hops and yeast. It contains superwater. Infact, beer is 90% water. Its fat free. Beer contains fiber, zero cholesterols, its rich in B vitamin a minerals (magnesium, silicon).

There is this perception that people with pot belly are always associated with excessive beer consumption and excessive bulging stomach is dangerous. Many people with pot belly are often said to be addicted to too much beer intake.

So, does beer cause pot belly?

The answer is NO!

Beer does not cause pot belly. However, too many calories that can turn your trim waistline into a belly that protrudes over your pants. Any kind of calories; whether from alcohol, sugary beverages, or oversized portions of food can increase belly fat. Calories is said to be the main cause of pot belly and the little calories in beer cannot make you to have pot belly if you drink moderately.

Study revealed that the men most likely to put on weight were those who drunk the most or, surprisingly, those who did not drink at all.

Moderate drinkers fared best in the research by German and Swedish experts.

However, alcohol intake is associated with bigger waists, because when you drink alcohol, the liver burns alcohol instead of fat,” says Michael Jensen, MD, an endocrine expert and obesity researcher with the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

Beer also gets the blame because alcohol calories are so easy to overdo. A typical beer has about 100 calories and if you down several in one sitting, you can end up with serious calorie overload.

And don’t forget calories from the foods you wash down with those beers. Alcohol can increase your appetite. Further, when you’re drinking beer at a bar or party, the food on hand is often fattening fare like pizza, wings, and other fried foods.

When you take in more calories than you burn, the excess calories are stored as fat. Where your body stores that fat is determined in part by your age, sex, and hormones. And beer is also said to be good for brain.

So, beer does not cause pot belly and fattening. Beer is good for your health even at old age you can drink beer but everyone must drink moderately.

It’s also advisable to eat before you drink.

So, drink responsibly!
