The Benue State House of Assembly has suspended its former Speaker, Aondona Dajoh, for a period of three months shortly after his resignation.
Dajoh was suspended over allegations of his involvement in a plot to impeach Governor Hyacinth Alia.
His suspension followed a motion moved by the lawmaker representing Kyan State Constituency, Terna Shimawua, and seconded by James Umoru from Apa State Constituency during Tuesday’s plenary session.
The new House Speaker, Alfred Berger, who presided over the plenary, however, reviewed Dajoh’s suspension from six to three months without the usual votes on such matters.
Dajoh resigned from his position as Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly on Sunday.
His resignation was communicated in a letter he personally signed, dated August 24, 2025, and made available to journalists.
Following his resignation, the lawmaker representing Makurdi North Constituency, Alfred Emberga, emerged as the new Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly.

He emerged at an emergency plenary session by the Benue State House of Assembly on Sunday, which was presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Lami Ogenyi.
Emberga was immediately sworn in as the new Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly after taking the oath of office administered by the Clerk of the House, John Hwande.
Prior to his emergence, the lawmakers set aside Emberga’s suspension, along with those of three other lawmakers.
The Assembly had earlier set aside its operating rules to allow them to carry on with the business of replacing the Speaker.
Emberga, who enjoys the support of Governor Hyacinth Alia, pledged to work with the lawmakers to pursue the development agenda of the state.
