Chelsea FC Hires Benitez as Interim Manager Replaces Di Matteo

Chelsea FC has hired former Liverpool coach Rafael Benitez as interim soccer manager until the end of the season after sacking Roberto Di Matteo.
Benitez agreed a short-term contract with the European champions until the end of the season, nearly two years after being fired by Inter Milan in his last coaching role. He was previously in charge of Valencia and Liverpool, the club where he won the Champions League in 2005.

The 52-year-old Benitez becomes the ninth manager under Chelsea’s Russian owner, Roman Abramovich, who displayed his trademark ruthlessness by cutting Roberto Di Matteo only six months after the Italian led the team to victory in the Champions League final over Bayern Munich.

“The owner and the board believe that in Benitez we have a manager with significant experience at the highest level of football, who can come in and immediately help deliver our objectives,” Chelsea said in a statement on its website.

“The two-time UEFA Manager of the Year comes with outstanding pedigree. He began his managerial career in his homeland, most notably at Valencia where he built a reputation as one of Europe’s top coaches by winning the Spanish League twice and the UEFA Cup. He then spent six years at Liverpool and led them to their fifth European Cup and an FA Cup”.
