COVID-19: Joe Biden Unveils Crisis Team Tasked With Curbing Surging Cases

United States President-elect Joe Biden has formed a 12-member Transition coronavirus, COVID-19 Advisory Board to help tackle and curb the pandemic.

The United States reported over 100,000 new cases of coronavirus on a daily basis and this is going to be the most challenging aspect of Biden’s administration.

The task force is led by three co-chairs: former Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, former Food and Drug Administration Commissioner, David Kessler and Dr. Marcella Nunez-Smith from Yale University.

COVID-19 advisors to the board members who will work closely with the task force include Beth Cameron, senior director for global health security and biodefense in the Obama administration, and Rebecca Katz, co-director of the Center for Global Health Science and Security at Georgetown University.

During a Zoom in meeting President-Elect Biden stated he wants experts to help tackle the current pandemic. He said ‘‘I wanted to be informed by science and by experts,”

He continued that “The advisory board will help shape my approach to managing the surge in reported infections; ensuring vaccines are safe, effective, and distributed efficiently, equitably, and free; and protecting at-risk populations,”.

The advisory board will help guide the Biden-Harris Transition in planning for the president-elect’s federal response.

The advisers will “consult with state and local officials to determine the public health and economic steps necessary to get the virus under control, to deliver immediate relief to working families, to address ongoing racial and ethnic disparities, and to reopen our schools and businesses safely and effectively,”

The advisory board members include

Rick Bright, a former vaccine expert at the Department of Health and Human Services.

Eric Goosby, an infectious diseases expert who previously served in the Obama and Clinton administrations.

Luciana Borio, former Food and Drug Administration acting chief scientist.

Ezekiel Emanuel, an oncologist, and adviser to Biden, vice provost for global initiatives at the University of Pennsylvania.

Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota.

Atul Gawande, Senior Advisor, a prominent doctor, health researcher, Department of Health and Human Services in the Clinton administration.

Loyce Pace, president and executive director of the Global Health Council.

Julie Morita, executive vice president of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and former Chicago commissioner of health.

Celine Gounder, a clinical assistant professor of medicine and infectious diseases at New York University.

Robert Rodriguez, a professor of emergency medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine.
