The Director-General of Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) Presidential Candidate’s Campaign Council, Dr. Doyin Okupe, yesterday paid the N13 million optional fine imposed on him by the court to evade two years in jail for money laundering totalling N200 million.
Okupe made the deadline for payment of the fine and left the court premises with his lawyers, after the court processed the papers, and all parties signed, including the EFCC lawyer.
He was found guilty on Monday by the Federal High Court, Abuja, presided over by Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu, and sentenced to a two-year prison term after he was convicted for money laundering and diversion of funds.
In sentencing Okupe, Ojukwu considered pleas for leniency by the defendant’s wife, Omolola, and son, Adesunkanmi.
The convict, a former Media Aide to President Goodluck Jonathan, had been arraigned on a 59-count charge of money laundering by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for accepting N204 million from the former National Security Adviser, Colonel Sambo Dasuki, in 2014.
The Judge found the ex-presidential aide guilty in 26 out of the 59 charges.
She ordered that the 26 charges, which attract a two-year jail term each, would run concurrently.
Ojukwu, however, gave the convict an option of N500,000 fine in each of the counts, totaling N13 million to be paid before 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
