DW and CapeTalk: Countdown to ’25 – Politics, Polarization, And The Role Of The Media
DW and CapeTalk will host a panel discussion with prominent commentators on the current state of media and politics in South Africa on November 21.
Marking 30 years of democracy in South Africa, the event “Countdown to ’25—Politics, Polarization and the Role of the Media,” hosted by DW and Cape Town’s CapeTalk Radio, will explore the role of the media in fostering dialogue and discussion—even amidst disagreement.
The panel discussion will feature Ben Graham Jones, a consultant specializing in emerging challenges to election integrity. He has served on over thirty election observation, assistance, and advisory missions. Anna Collard, SVP of Content Strategy & Evangelist for KnowBe4 Africa, and Pippa Green, award-winning South African journalist, editor, and author, will also participate.
Claus Stäcker, DW Director Programs for Africa: “It is not only my deep conviction but also our legal mandate as DW to build bridges. In a world that is becoming increasingly polarized and radicalized, media in North and South should contribute to tolerance, freedom of opinion, acceptance of different perspectives, and constructive discourse. Our everyday cooperation – and this joint event with CapeTalk in particular – is a small but important building block.”
Tessa van Staden, Station Manager at CapeTalk Radio: “We have a responsibility to zoom out of covering daily developments and to reflect on our role as news providers. We shape our audiences’ views and the broader discourse. Increased smartphone use worldwide has forced media brands like CapeTalk – and DW – to become more agile to reach news consumers. But we must do more than publish and broadcast: Our coverage of the world and ongoing conversations should decrease the distance between people, rather than increase the divide.”
Asumpta Lattus, DW Head of English for Africa: “The media has the power to shape political opinions and promote dialogue. In times of polarization, it is our duty to provide a platform for diverse voices.”
“Countdown to ’25 – Politics, polarization and the Role of the media” will take place on November 21 at 09:30 a.m. SAST/10:30 a.m. CET on the CapeTalk premises in Green Point. You can follow the event via Facebook livestream, hosted by CapeTalk and DW Africa.
