Spanish Football Association (RFEF) President, Luis Rubiales, has been suspended by the world football ruling body(FIFA) from football-related activities for three months after he kissed Jenni Hermoso at the Women’s World Cup final.
The latest development is coming less 24 hours after Rubiales insisted at a press conference on Friday that he would not resign his position in the face of criticism for kissing Hermoso on the lips as Spain celebrated winning the Women’s World Cup after beating England 1-0 in the final last Sunday.
Many female and male players like Borja Iglesias and David de Gea spoke out against Rubiales’ conduct.
They also called for him to quit his role, and now FIFA’s own disciplinary committee have acted.
The suspension, which commences today (Saturday) and will last for at least 90 days, has been delivered under the powers of Article 51 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC).
As part of this latest sanction, Rubiales has been told he must “refrain, through himself or third parties, from contacting or attempting to contact the professional player of the Spanish national football team Ms. Jennifer Hermoso or her close environment.”
FIFA’s statement added: “FIFA reiterates its absolute commitment to respect the integrity of all persons and therefore condemns with the utmost vigour any behaviour to the contrary.”
