FilmHouse, Angel Studios Inspire Makoko Kids With Cinema Experience to Unlock Creativity and Talent

The Makoko community in Lagos received a heartwarming Easter gift as FilmHouse, in collaboration with Angel Studios and Bread of Hope Foundation, hosted hundreds of underprivileged children for an unforgettable movie experience. Driven by a desire to nurture creativity and expose young minds to new possibilities, the initiative brought joy to children who rarely have access to cinemas or structured entertainment. According to Winifred Wessels, Head of Marketing at FilmHouse, the effort is part of a broader commitment to reach underserved communities and inspire them to dream beyond their immediate surroundings.

Wessels emphasized that every child has a story, and storytelling—whether through film, books, or music—can be a powerful tool for self-expression and healing. “Many of these children have talents that need only exposure and encouragement,” she noted. Drawing inspiration from the likes of the Ikorodu Bois, she expressed hope that the Makoko kids would begin creating their own stories and see the world beyond their daily realities. FilmHouse is passionate about identifying and nurturing young talent, and believes cinema can be a gateway for children to realize their potential.

The initiative, which included a special screening of King of Kings, catered to 600 children in Lagos, 300 in Abuja, and 100 in Aba. According to Gift Akume Akuagwuagwa, who oversees volunteer management at Angel Studios, the timing of the event was carefully chosen to coincide with a non-school day so children could enjoy the full experience without disrupting their education. The partnership, she explained, is rooted in a shared vision of enriching young lives with value-driven entertainment and experiences that uplift.

Funding for the event came from Angel Studios, with Bread of Hope coordinating the logistics and FilmHouse providing food, clothing, and a warm environment. Uche Abasi, Account Manager at Angel Studios, added that the initiative was not just about fun—it was about giving these children a memorable Easter filled with purpose. With ongoing plans to repeat and expand the initiative, the partners hope to create lasting impact, one screening at a time.

Winifred Wessels, Head of Marketing at FilmHouse, shared:

“The Makoko community has been very close to my heart since I was a child. Just driving through and seeing how they live—school, feeding, day-to-day life—has always touched me. From the outside, they may seem isolated, but there’s so much potential there. This initiative is about giving them a new experience—access to entertainment that broadens their horizon and shows them there’s more beyond what they know. FilmHouse is passionate about discovering young talent because when you start early, you can go far.”

“Cinema validates children. It gives them the chance to create something and see how the world reacts. That validation can inspire them to dream big. Many of them go through difficult situations, but when they discover what God has placed inside them, they can use it to inform, encourage, and entertain. That’s why this access to film and creativity is vital.”

“We’ve partnered with organizations like Shades of Life, who support children with special needs, to give access to cinema experiences. Whether it’s through seeing other people’s stories or learning to tell their own, we want them to know their creativity is valuable and needed. Like the Ikorodu Bois who recreate films, these children can also craft their own stories. Everyone has a story the world needs to hear.”

“This is part of our CSR. For this event, Bread of Hope brought the children together and covered cinema costs, while FilmHouse provided food, clothing, and a better overall experience. Angel Studios, producers of King of Kings, also supported the initiative. And no, it’s not a one-off—we’ll keep doing this with more films, more experiences. It could even involve taking them behind the scenes to see how movies are made.”

Gift Akume Akuagwuagwa, from Angel Studios, said:

“This is a pay-it-forward initiative by Angel Studios. We reached out to Bread of Hope because they work closely with children and have organized similar events. Together with FilmHouse, FilmOne, and Bread of Hope, we were able to sponsor 600 kids in Lagos, 300 in Abuja, and 100 in Aba. Though we’ve done many partnerships before, this is our first time doing something like this.”

“We specifically chose a non-school day because we didn’t want the kids to miss school or get home late. The movie King of Kings was released just the day before, and we wanted them to experience it without any rush.”

Uche Abasi, Account Manager at Angel Studios, added:

“Our goal is to help children have a beautiful Easter while learning values that stay with them for life.”
