Forget And Reach

Forget and reach. These two words encompass most of all it takes in attitude and action to consistently make progress, succeed and be at peace in life. Apostle Paul wrote this note to the Philippians:

Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things, which are behind, and reaching forward to those things, which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 3:12-14)

According to the scripture above, the profile of a person who reaches his or her goal is one who with an attitude that moves on quickly with evidence of an established cycle of forgetting and reaching.

As you move deeper into the second half of 2020 you need to forget past mistakes, hurts and disappointments. Negative emotions have a way of dragging a person down. They also cloud vision and make it difficult to see opportunities. Persons living with bitterness often harm themselves more than they do those they are bitter towards. Anger sucks up energy and it has no capacity to bring good except it is turned around to passion to make a difference.

Apostle Paul is also reminding you that you must learn to forget your successes quickly. Holding on to past glory can be an hindrance to progress. The successes of yesteryears are good to remember and even recount to others. But, be careful not to build a monument around it so that it confines you. You need an attitude that acknowledges success on one hand and regards it as nothing on the other hands.

In my piece, “Forget it!” which I wrote on 21st January 2018, I emphasised that to forget is to refuse to allow a particular thing to have its normal hold when you remember it and not an obliteration of memory. My attitude is to celebrate achievements whether big or small. After that, I like to ask myself – “What is next?” For me, this same attitude and question applies to losses. I grieve, mourn or allow myself the right to feel the pain but only for a while.


I see the word reach or reaching as a combination of three words – intention, effort and achievement. It is not enough to forget about the past. In fact, forgetting becomes a waste when you fail to reach. One must be intentional about moving forward. First, you conceive the vision for next steps. Then, you take those steps and be dynamic to try alternative ones with patience until you attain your goal. 

Forgetting and reaching do not necessarily have to happen in sequence. Sometimes, they happen simultaneously. At other times, you have reached and then you need to forget. At other times you forget so you can reach. They are two sides of the same coin. The important thing is to keep the cycle going because this is the attitude that ultimately wins the race.
