Fubara Gets Clearance for APC Governorship Primary in Rivers State

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has gotten the nod from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to run in the party’s governorship primary slated for May 21.

Fubara was screened and cleared by the APC screening committee at the Plateau Governors’ Lodge in Abuja on Saturday.

He was among 17 serving governors whose credentials were verified and assessed by the committee ahead of the party’s primaries.

The development came days after the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, said he had not endorsed any candidate for the 2027 Rivers governorship election.

Wike, during his monthly media parley in Abuja on Wednesday, said any endorsement would come only after a meeting of the state-level joint coalition.

He said, “I haven’t endorsed anybody. And I can’t endorse anybody until the joint coalition meets.”

Despite Wike’s denial, there have been speculations that the minister may support former Rivers State Commissioner for Works, Alabo Dakorinama George-Kelly, for the governorship race.

Wike was said to have settled for George-Kelly after a closed-door meeting with key political stakeholders in Port Harcourt on Monday.

The APC governorship primary is expected to test the strength of political blocs in Rivers State ahead of the 2027 election.
