Govt Diverts Traffic For Lagos Marathon

As Lagos prepares for this year’s Lagos City Marathon, the state government has released a comprehensive traffic diversion plan to ensure smooth movement around the city.
The marathon, set to take place on Saturday, 15th of February, 2025, will run from 5:00 am to 1:00 pm, bringing major changes to traffic flow throughout the day.
In a Tuesday statement, the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, noted that the race will start at the National Stadium in Surulere and pass through several major routes, including Ikorodu Road, Anthony (Bertola), and Gbagada.
The runners will proceed over the Third Mainland Bridge, heading toward Lagos Island and crossing major roads such as Dolphin Road, Alfred Rewane Road, and Falomo Roundabout.

The race will continue along Bourdillon Road, across the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge, before reaching Admiralty Way and Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, concluding at Ahmadu Bello Way, Eko Atlantic.
The government, therefore, mapped out alternative routes to allow seamless commuting during the marathon.
“Motorists from the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway (Mowe and nearby areas) should take the Ojota Slip Road, connect Ikorodu Road, and continue through Funsho Williams Avenue to Eko Bridge,” the government said.
“The Third Mainland Bridge will remain closed to traffic heading towards Lagos Island but will be accessible to motorists travelling to the Mainland,” it added.
Motorists traveling from Lagos Island to the Mainland will also have alternative routes, including Apongbon Bridge, Eko Bridge, and Costain Roundabout, or a route via Victoria Island and Independence Bridge.
Osiyemi assured residents that traffic management officials would be deployed along key areas to ease congestion and minimise disruptions.
