Gunmen Invade Plateau Community, Kill Several Residents

Residents of Angwan Rukuba in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State were gripped by panic on Sunday evening as suspected gunmen carried out a deadly assault on the Gari Ya Waye community, with many feared killed and several others injured.

It was gathered that the attack, which occurred at about 7:50 pm, saw heavily armed assailants storm the community and open fire on residents.

Eyewitnesses said the sound of gunshots sent residents fleeing in different directions as the attackers unleashed terror on the area.

Although the exact number of casualties has yet to be confirmed, sources within the community said several people were killed while many others sustained gunshot wounds.

Residents described the incident as terrifying, noting that the gunmen carried out the assault swiftly before disappearing into the night.

The attackers reportedly fired sporadically, forcing residents to run for safety while others hid in their homes.

Some of the injured victims were rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention as the community grappled with the aftermath of the attack.

Security operatives, including personnel of the Nigerian Army and other agencies, were said to have responded to distress calls shortly after the incident.

Their arrival helped restore calm in the area while efforts were made to secure the community and assist victims.

Security personnel have also launched investigations aimed at identifying and apprehending those responsible for the attack.

As of Sunday night, no group had claimed responsibility for the assault, while the motive behind the attack remained unclear.

Authorities urged residents to remain vigilant while assuring them that security agencies were working to prevent further violence and bring the perpetrators to justice.

The latest attack has further heightened tension in parts of Plateau State, a region that has faced repeated incidents of violent attacks in recent years.

Community leaders and residents have continued to call for increased security presence and decisive action to tackle the root causes of the recurring violence.
