Heavy Rainfall, Flooding, and Thunderstorms Expected Nationwide – NiMet

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) forecasts thundery and rainy conditions nationwide from Monday to Wednesday, advising of potential flash floods in various states during this period.
In a weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet highlighted expected rainfall patterns for the northern, central, and southern regions, cautioning residents to take preventive measures to ensure safety.
NiMet projected morning thunderstorms with moderate rainfall in parts of Adamawa, Taraba, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Jigawa, Kano, and Katsina States on Monday.
“Later in the afternoon or evening hours, thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected over the entire region,” the agency stated.
The forecast warned of a high possibility of floods, particularly in Adamawa, Taraba, and Bauchi States, during the three-day outlook.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, the northern region is expected to continue experiencing morning and afternoon thunderstorms across Taraba, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, Kaduna, Zamfara, Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Yobe, Jigawa, Kano, and Adamawa States.
For the central part of Nigeria, NiMet predicted light rains on Monday morning over Benue, FCT, Niger, Kogi, and Nasarawa States, extending into the afternoon and evening hours in Nasarawa, Kwara, Kogi, Plateau, Niger, Benue, and FCT.
Similar conditions are expected to persist on Tuesday and Wednesday with intermittent rainfall spreading across Niger, Nasarawa, Kwara, Kogi, Plateau, Benue, and the Federal Capital Territory.
NiMet forecasted cloudy skies with chances of light rain on Monday morning in Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, Anambra, Abia, Ogun, Edo, Delta, Lagos, Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa States.

By the afternoon, light rain is expected to intensify in Abia, Imo, Ebonyi, Anambra, Osun, Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, Ekiti, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Lagos, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States, with a high flood risk in Oyo, Ogun, Edo, and Delta States.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, intermittent light rains will persist across southern states, with flood warnings issued for Anambra, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and specifically Bayelsa State towards midweek.
The agency advised Nigerians to avoid driving during heavy rainfall and for states with predicted flash floods to activate emergency response systems immediately.
“Ensure warm clothing for vulnerable persons due to low night-time temperatures and make sure loose objects are fastened to avoid collisions,” NiMet cautioned.
It also warned against staying under tall trees during storms and advised residents to disconnect electrical appliances to prevent damage from lightning or power surges.
Airline operators have been directed to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet to aid flight planning and ensure passenger safety.
