Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole on Friday, lauded Guinness Nigeria Plc. for investing about N35bn in expanding the capacity of its Benin Brewery. Comrade Oshiomhole described the company as a valued private sector partner with the best interest of the people and government of Edo State at heart. He attributed the increased inflow of investment into the state from the company, to a great extent, to the enabling environment created in the state through focused and visionary leadership.
This came to the fore during a working visit to the Edo State Government House by the management of Guinness Nigeria Plc, led by its Managing Director and Chief Executive, Mr. Seni Adetu.
Commending the management of Guinness Nigeria Plc., the governor said, “The sheer size of this new investment in the Benin Brewery indicates that Edo State is a safe haven for long-term investment. It is a strong vote of confidence in the state and in the economic development programme of our administration which seeks to fast track development and employment creation.
“In spite of the challenges facing manufacturers in the country, Guinness Nigeria Plc has not only been thriving as exemplified by its increased investment in Edo State, but has also been giving back to our communities through its corporate social responsibility projects. On our part, we are making a firm commitment to providing necessary security to safeguard its investment and infrastructure to keep its manufacturing facility in the state functioning to its maximum capacity.”
Speaking at the event, Managing Director and Chief Executive, Guinness Nigeria Plc., Mr. Seni Adetu congratulated Comrade Adams Oshiomhole on his re-election as Governor of Edo State and appreciated him for his staunch support to the company in recent times. According to Mr. Adetu, “Guinness Nigeria is a key stakeholder in the state and as such we are very appreciative of the efforts of the state government in partnering with us and supporting our efforts. Through the years we have enriched lives in Edo State through road construction projects, scholarships, healthcare, charitable donations and the Guinness Water of Life projects which aim to improve access to potable water and sanitary conditions in the state.”
Mr. Adetu noted that Guinness is at the forefront of private sector investment in Nigeria, describing the company as the biggest contributor to direct and indirect employment in Edo state after the state government. He added that the company’s economic impact in the state is estimated at about N33 billion annually and that the new investment in capacity will bring immense benefits to the state through tax payments and provision of direct and indirect employment to youths thereby making Guinness Nigeria a valuable partner in progress with the government and people of the state.
In his closing remarks, Comrade Oshiomhole called on Guinness Nigeria Plc. to partner with the state government to renovate the Ramat Park and other recreational parks in the state. He added that this would further help in uplifting the socio-cultural standards of the state just as the company is doing with the sponsorship of the annual Igué Festival which has had a profound effect on the people of the state. He said the Edo State Government is hopeful that the existing strong and cordial relationship between Guinness and Edo State would be further strengthened by future partnerships.
