Ibadan Chief Seeks Outright Cancellation Of RUGA

Call against Rural Grazing Areas (RUGA) Settlement initiative get a boost on Wednesday as one of the prominent Olubadan Chiefs, Dr. Taiye Ayorinde called on the Federal Government to outrightly cancel the RUGA, an initiative under President Muhammodu Buhari led agric programme  for herdesmen, rather than its  decision to suspend the programme to a  future time .

The 84 year old traditional ruler, the Baale of Ekotedo, Ibadan expressed with dismay how cattle rearing issue, a private business suddenly became government concern to the extent of planning federal might to hijack other people’s lands for it.

Dr Ayorinde declared that the present government is pushing Nigeria to a point of destruction if it fails to cancel the programme .

Speaking at the presentation of Obafemi Awolowo Leadership Award to Dr. Ayorinde as the most outstanding Baale in Yorubaland by  the Congress of Nigerian Youths ( CONYO) , the recipient said the Federal Government can do the country a lot of good by canceling the RUGA programme rather than saying  the programme is suspended , waiting for another convenient time to reintroduce it under a different name.

He referred to the pronouncement  of late Justice Adewale Thompson, of the Supreme Court , which declared that anyone who must keep animals must provide housing and avoid roaming of animals in the streets anywhere in Nigeria.

“Why is that we have a government who will not listen to its citizens, and who will not obey the law . The law  stipulates that on no account should animals found roaming about without the owner providing housing for the animals. He must provide a barn or ranches for the animals , that is the law of the land and we expect this government to apply the law to ensure peace ,” he said.

Dr. Ayoride, a philantropist  and member Ibadan Elders Council also declared that no parcel of land in yorubaland that would be donated for herdsmen.

According to him, “Every land in yorubaland were by inheritance, passed on by our forefathers and you cannot come from somewhere and said you want to overtake any family land. As one of those who attended the last Yoruba Summit, it was our collective decision there that it is not possible to rugalise Yorubaland. The Federal Government is advised to cancel outright the RUGA programme and not suspension”.

The National President of Congress of Nigerian Youths, Ambassador Oluyomi Oloyede extolled the virtues of Dr. Ayorinde describing him as a great achiever who has brought hope to the hopeless.

According to Oloyede, “Not that baba has millions of naira, but with his little means, he has uplifted  many and fed the hungry. We have identify the recipient as someone who has given hope to the hopeless without millions of naira, but with what he is getting as pension to eat, he used to uplift the needy in the society”.

The event which witnessed free eye test and other health related services offered health care to the poor and other members of the community.

Olubunmi who led other health workers to the event disclosed that Dr. Ayorinde has been offering free health care services to the poor since 2005 .

According to her, “Baale has been doing this great job for many years. We thank him for his kind gesture. The health care services is a monthly programme that Baale granted us the honor to be holding since 2005. We can call it a primary healthcare because we are able to take the services to the door steps of the people, and make healthcare services to the poor. And others have since emulated this model. Now,  we hold one at the Olubadan’s palace and Amuludu FM “.

Present at the event are some traditional Ibadan chiefs including Asipa Balogun, Joseph Ayeni, and Oloye Gbola Raji.

Others are the Proprietress of Seed of Life School, Mrs. Kikelomo Rusewe and the Chairman, Impact Business Radio , a private radio station in Ibadan, Alhaji Ambali Ali.
