Impact Africa Summit 6.0: Amplifying African Voices in Clinical Trials

Africa has the potential to transform the global clinical research and Research & Development landscape.

With genetically diverse populations, a rising burden of disease, and increasing regulatory harmonization, the continent is strategically positioned to lead in cutting-edge health research. However, Africa contributes less than 3% to global clinical trials. This shows underutilized capacity, fragmented infrastructure, and limited local ownership.

The 6th Edition of the Impact Africa Summit (IAS) 2025 aims to shift this narrative. Our theme for this year is rooted in a vision to building a self-sustaining clinical research ecosystem in Sub-Saharan Africa by ensuring that African voices, expertise, and institutions are at the heart of the conversation. Africa’s active leadership is both necessary and long overdue.

There is a groundswell in Africa in support of local pharmaceutical production, which would reduce Africa’s dependency on the rest of the developed economies for medicines and interventions. A focus on quality, scaling operations, establishing regional hubs, strategically prioritizing drug-product formulation, and enhancing existing value chains will create a pathway for Sub-Sahara Africa in developing a robust regional pharmaceutical industry.

The theme for IAS 2025, “Strengthening Capacity in Clinical Trials Through Local Engagement and Global Partnership across Sub-Saharan Africa” would drive conversations centered on enhancing human resources, adequate infrastructure, operating costs, strengthening links between local and international pharma bodies, and implementing proper regulations.

By convening thought leaders, regulators, sponsors, academic institutions, and community advocates, IAS 2025 will foster inclusive, African-led development of the clinical trials sector through local engagement and empowered through global partnerships.

Impact Africa Summit 2025 presents a launch pad for all clinical trial stakeholders; regulatory, healthcare organizations, pharmaceutical bodies, medical/clinical practitioners, trial sponsors and experts to engage in shaping policies, building designs and systems that deliver transformational healthcare solutions for Africa.

The summit will also focus on Sub-Sahara’s position on building resilient infrastructure, promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialization and fostering innovation

Why Africa?

Faster Growth: Because the Sub-Saharan population is growing rapidly and more people can afford healthcare, emerging markets are seeing the biggest increase in demand for medicine.

Unique Needs: Leveraging the diverse demographics, unique disease burdens, and untapped potential of this region, we aim to foster dialogue, innovation, accelerate drug development, and improve healthcare outcomes on a global scale.

Available Talent: Africa is home to a growing pool of young, educated, and ambitious scientists, healthcare professionals, and innovators. With the right investment in training and infrastructure, these talents can conduct world-class research and contribute to clinical development. The continent’s academic institutions and research centers are increasingly ready to serve as hubs for global scientific advancement.

Into the theme:

Integrating African Voices

The inclusion of African voices at the center of global clinical research is an unquestionably loud echo; this call is not just ripe but apt. It’s not enough to run studies in Africa, but there is a need for African researchers, institutions, and communities leading the way, right from the planning stage to execution and decision-making.

Our researchers and universities should be shaping how trials are designed and led. As the real stories and needs of African patients must guide our ethics, policies, and research priorities.

Publishing our own findings, build our own evidence, and set global standards through African-led work are purpose-driven. And our academic and research centers should be recognized and supported as engines of real, world-changing innovation.

Strengthening Capacity

For clinical trials in Africa to thrive long-term, we need to build systems that last. Which means smart investment, especially in infrastructure, talent development, and retention. There is a need for more standard laboratories, better data systems, and trial sites that meet global standards on the continent. As well as support for local and synergy by regulators, ethics committees, and oversight bodies to do their jobs well and independently. And most importantly, we need to grow a strong, skilled workforce—through training, mentorship, and partnerships between African universities, research institutions and global institutions.

Local Engagement

Clinical research must build trust, inclusion, and respect for local culture. Communities, patients, and advocacy groups also need to help shape what we research, not just closed invitations but open participation. An open, honest conversation that builds trust and shows people they are more than just study subjects, but contributors to the future of healthcare.

Global Partnerships

Africa doesn’t need charity, but equity and strategic partnerships that build lasting value. We must replace outdated donor-recipient models with bi-directional collaborations that strengthen local capacity, leadership, and influence policy.

This year’s summit for DAY 1 will consist of at least 2 Panel discussions and standalone topics and DAY 2 with several breakout rooms, with the aim to focus on sub-Saharan Africa’s position on building resilient infrastructure, promoting inclusive and defining collaborative ways between Local and Global stakeholders.
