The Chairman of the Nigeria Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, has explain the decision to increase the number of polling units in Nigeria saying that is not meant to give any region or ethnic group an advantage but to improve the country’s electoral process. Channels reports.
Professor Jega, who made this known on Wednesday while reacting to criticisms by some groups that the new polling units, favoured the northern part of the country.
The commission said it would review the structure of polling units in Nigeria and create additional ones, though the decision has been condemned by some groups.
According to him, “With a voters’ register figure of over 70 million, and based on a 500 voters per polling booth, there should be at least 140 000 polling units in the country.”
