Kenya’s Iconic Opposition Leader, Raila Odinga, Dies at 80 in India After Cardiac Failure

Kenya is mourning the loss of one of its most influential political figures, Raila Odinga, who passed away at the age of 80 on Wednesday in India. The former Prime Minister and veteran opposition leader reportedly died from cardiac failure while receiving treatment at an Ayurvedic hospital in Kochi, Kerala, following a minor stroke.
Odinga’s death marks the end of an era in Kenya’s political history. For decades, he stood as a central figure in the nation’s democratic journey—often seen as the voice of the people and a relentless advocate for reform. His political career, spanning over four decades, was defined by resilience, courage, and his unwavering commitment to democratic ideals.
A five-time presidential contender, Raila Odinga was instrumental in shaping Kenya’s multiparty democracy and played a key role in the creation of the 2010 Constitution, which strengthened institutions and expanded civil liberties. Despite numerous political battles and electoral defeats, he remained a unifying figure, admired for his passion, intellect, and ability to mobilize millions across the country.
In response to his passing, President William Ruto convened an emergency security council meeting to discuss the national implications and coordinate state protocols for the former leader’s burial arrangements. Tributes have poured in from across the world, with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi describing Odinga as “a true statesman and a champion of democracy,” while Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali praised his “vision for a peaceful and prosperous Africa.”
