Kenya’s William Ruto Bows to Pressure, Steps Down Finance Bill 2024
President William Ruto of Kenya has declined assent to the 2024 Finance Bill.
This was followed by widespread protests across the country after the Bill was passed by the National Assembly on Tuesday 25th, 2024.
Tuesday deadly demonstrations saw protesters breach Parliament for the first time in the country’s history.
His decision to decline assent and return the bill to Parliament will be seen as an attempt to de-escalate the situation, with protesters threatening to return to the streets on Thursday.
The president said the people have spoken. “I have conceded and because we have gotten rid of it, we need to have a conversation as a nation,” he said.
