‘Maoni Mtaani 2025’ In Tanzania: Exploring The Role Of Social Media In Democracy

DW, together with Star TV and Radio Free Africa, hosts Maoni Mtaani 2025, a timely public discussion on the intersection of social media and civic engagement.

Taking place at the University of Saint Augustine in Mwanza on Saturday, 07 June 2025 at 10:00 AM (GMT+3), the event brings together voices from the media, civil society, and academia under the theme:

“Click, Like, Vote: Is Social Media Shaping Our Democracy?”

The panel will explore how digital platforms are influencing civic engagement, political discourse, and participation in Tanzania and beyond, with a focus on young people as the driving force behind these shifts. From viral campaigns to digital advocacy, the discussion will examine both the opportunities and challenges that social media presents for democratic societies.

Panelists:

  • Meena Ally – Influencer and media personality, known for her advocacy on youth and women’s empowerment through her platforms and public engagements.
  • Lilian Ruguga – Media and communications expert with a focus on youth engagement and digital storytelling.
  • Dickson Mpilipili (Moderator) – Media professional and experienced moderator in civic and political discourse.
