Mpox: Step-by-step Measures For Staying Safe

As the Mpox virus continues its alarming spread across Africa, with Nigeria increasingly feeling its impact, citizens must take proactive measures to protect themselves and their loved ones.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and Prevention on Friday announced that the country has recorded a total of 40 confirmed cases of mpox out of 830 suspected cases.

NCDC Director-General, Dr Jide Idris, made this announcement at the Joint NCDC/World Health Organisation National Mpox briefing with stakeholders and partners in Abuja.

The NCDC also notified all public and private hospitals about the Mpox alert and sent out a list of referral isolation/treatment centres across the six geopolitical zones.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) this month declared the surge of mpox cases from DR Congo to other African nations to be a global health emergency. It has also called for greater production and sharing of vaccines.

The WHO has also described mpox as a global health emergency. According to experts, a public health emergency of international concern is the highest possible alarm the WHO can sound.

To mitigate the risk of infection and curtail the virus’s creep, it’s crucial to adhere to essential safety precautions.

In this critical moment, it is important to follow the vital step-by-step safety measures Nigerians can take to shield themselves from the mpox threat, ensuring a safer and more informed community.

This article provides a comprehensive guide on controlling the spread of Mpox, covering four key areas: personal protective measures, preventing transmission, healthcare precautions, and community-based prevention strategies, to empower individuals and communities to take proactive steps against the virus.

Personal Precautions

1. Practice good hygiene: Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, especially after using public transportation, before eating, and after using the bathroom.

2. Avoid close contact: Maintain a safe distance from anyone showing symptoms of mpox, such as rash, fever, or swollen lymph nodes.

3. Use personal protective equipment (PPE): Wear masks, gloves, and eye protection when caring for someone with mpox.

Preventing Transmission

1. Avoid skin-to-skin contact: Refrain from touching or shaking hands with someone with mpox.

2. Avoid sharing personal items: Don’t share bedding, towels, clothing, or utensils with someone who has mpox.

3. Clean and disinfect: Regularly clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may have come into contact with someone with mpox.

Healthcare Precautions

1. Seek medical attention: If you experience symptoms of mpox, such as rash, fever, or swollen lymph nodes, seek medical attention immediately.

2. Get vaccinated: Consider getting vaccinated against mpox if you’re in a high-risk group, such as healthcare workers or those with weakened immune systems.

Community Precautions

1. Stay informed: Stay up-to-date with the latest information on mpox outbreaks in Nigeria.

2. Report suspected cases: If you suspect someone has mpox, report it to the authorities immediately.

3. Support public health efforts: Cooperate with public health officials and support efforts to contain the outbreak.

Additional Tips

1. Avoid touching animals: Avoid touching animals that may carry the virus, such as rodents or primates.

2. Avoid consuming bushmeat: Avoid consuming bushmeat or other wild game that may carry the virus.

3. Stay safe during travel: Take precautions when traveling to areas with mpox outbreaks.
