NDLEA Seizes Drugs Worth N134bn In Lagos

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has made significant strides in curbing drug abuse across Nigeria by targeting both potential users and those already addicted.

Mitchell Ofoyeju, Commander of Narcotics at the Tin Can Island Port Strategic Command, gave the assessment during a courtesy visit by a delegation of maritime journalists in Lagos.

Commander Ofoyeju stressed that drug trafficking and abuse was no longer just a criminal threat, but a critical global health issue requiring urgent and sustained intervention.

He revealed that through the deployment of modern technology and the strategic use of sniffer dogs, the Command has confiscated over 405 kilogrammes of illicit drugs—including 36.19kg of cannabis indica, 13.75kg of Tramadol, and 57.12kg of cocaine—between last year and early this year.

Commander Ofoyeju praised the leadership of NDLEA Chairman, Buba Marwa for the agency’s transformation since 2021. He pointed to key reforms, such as intelligence-led operations, increased funding, rigorous training, and partnerships with international agencies.

On the demand-reduction front, the Commander noted that the NDLEA was actively engaging communities with awareness campaigns to educate citizens about the dangers and health implications of drug use.

He pledged to strengthen collaboration with journalists in order to amplify public sensitization efforts and further expose the agency’s anti-drug initiatives.
