NECA Recognises Guinness Nigeria Plc For Exceptional Safety Culture And Safe Work Place Practice
Guinness Nigeria Plc, the nation’s foremost brewing company, has been recognised for its exceptional safety culture principles by the Nigerian Employers Consultative Association (NECA) and the Nigerian Social Insurance Trust Fund, (NSITF). The recognition was made during an event held by National Workplace Safety Awareness Day as they hosted several heads of organizations, regulatory bodies and government. The key note address was delivered by Dr. (Mrs) Janet Asherson, OSH expert, International Organization of Employers IOE, Geneva, Switzerland and attending dignitaries included Chief Richard Uche, President of NECA and Alhaji Munir Abubakar, Managing Director NSITF amongst others.
While receiving the award, Human Resources Director, Guinness Nigeria, Mr. Wale Adediran, expressed his gratitude on the recognition given to the company by the institutions.
“We are very proud to be here receiving this award today. I would like to use this opportunity to pledge our continuing commitment to hold the flag high and keep the torch burning. We do not just want to be role models to other businesses in Nigeria, but to be role models to the global industry. And we know that come next year, other organizations will be encouraged and motivated to be a part of this initiative and effect a zero-harm policy across Nigerian work-places,” Adediran said.
The assessment was carried out by NECA in partnership with NSITF as part of their quest to promote a safe and healthy workplace for every Nigerian employee. The partnership piloted an Occupational Safety and Health audit scheme of selected companies in Lagos and Ogun States in order to determine the extent of compliance with existing rules, laws and standards on Occupational Safety & Health, the quality of health and safety/accident prevention infrastructure in contributing companies amongst other factors.
Cephas Afebuameh, Supply Chain Director, Guinness Nigeria Plc, said: “Guinness Nigeria have three factories – Lagos, Benin and Aba, with over two thousand people working in those facilities daily. This award is testament to our ZERO HARM agenda which means that no harm comes to anyone on our premises both employees and visitors every day. At Guinness Nigeria safety is a top priority for us in everything we do.”
The Director General, Nigerian Employers Consultative Association of Nigeria (NECA), Mr Olusegun Oshinowo, while congratulating Guinness Nigeria and addressing guests at the event, explained the need for attention to be given to issues relating to work-place safety.
According to him, “Employers need to pay attention to safety especially in today’s fast transforming world. An average of two million people die annually from workplace accidents and that is why this initiative is of paramount importance not just to employees and employers alike, but also to NECA. We are proud and happy to be associated with this great move.”
Guinness Nigeria also received a brand new Toyota Hiace Ambulance to further help the organisation continue to set the standard for safety within the industry and country. Other companies who were also recognised during the event were Lisabi Mills, Berger Paints, Dangote Agro Sacks, Nestle Nigeria Plc, Unilever Nigeria, May and Baker Plc, Lafarge Plc, UAC Foods Plc, amongst others.
The recognition of Guinness Nigeria for ‘Safe Work Place Practice’ further buttresses earlier awards received by the company during the course of the year – ‘Best Company in Labour Practice’ Award during the Social Enterprise Report and Awards (SERA) and ‘Great Place to Work’ Award the company received earlier in the year where it emerged tops from 250 companies nominated for the Award.
NECA is the umbrella organization of employers in the Organised Private Sector of Nigeria, formed in 1957 to provide the forum for the Government to consult with private sector employers on socio-economic and labour policy issues. NECA provides a platform for private sector employers to interact with the government, labour, communities and other relevant institutions in and outside Nigeria for the purpose of promoting harmonious business environment that will engender productivity and prosperity for the benefit of all.
