The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has approached the Court of Appeal to halt his current trial. His application seeks to stop further proceedings before Justice James Omotosho at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
In the motion, Kanu asked the appellate court to order a stay of judgment in his terrorism trial pending the determination of his appeal challenging the legality of the proceedings.
The motion, filed pursuant to Section 36(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), urged the Appeal Court to halt the lower court from delivering its judgment earlier fixed for November 20, 2025.
Kanu’s fresh legal move, if granted, may affect the scheduled date for judgment in the case being handled by Justice Omotosho.
Justice Omotosho had earlier fixed November 20 for judgment in the terrorism-related charges filed against the IPOB leader by the Federal Government.
However, Kanu’s legal team has consistently argued that the charges against him are defective, insisting that he cannot be tried under a repealed version of the Terrorism (Prevention) Act.
The Court of Appeal is expected to consider the motion and determine whether to stay proceedings at the Federal High Court pending the outcome of Kanu’s appeal.
Details of the hearing date for the motion were yet to be confirmed.
