The Local Organising Committee (LOC) has announced a total amount of $278,000 for the winners of the eight Obudu International Mountain Race and the fourth African Nations Mountain Running Championships for this year.
LOC announced an increase from the $245, 500 to $278,000 due to the introduction of women’s version of the African Nations Mountain Running Championship.
Meanwhile the 10th positions in this year’s race remains the same while the winners in each gender category go home with $50,000 each, just as $20,000 and $9,000 go to the second and third finishers respectively.
The prizes for fourth to 10th positions in each category also remain at $4,500, $4,000, $3,000, $2,500, $2,000, $1,500 and $1,000 respectively. In a statement made available to Guardian Newspaper, LOC Chairman, William Archibong, was quoted saying the prize money for the Obudu Ranch on November 17 is retained because, “Cross River State Governor, Liyel Imoke, wants the competition to maintain its status as the highest paying mountain race in the world.
“He is happy with the way the competition has been organised since its maiden edition in 2005 and wants us to make this year’s event even bigger and better in terms of technical organisation as well as quality of athletes who will participate.”
