OPINION: Who Gets Drowned Should Akinwunmi Ambode Loose, Igbos or ORIJIN? – Afolabi Temitayo
By Afolabi Temitayo
Should Akinwunmi Ambode, candidate of the All Progressives Congress – APC in tomorrow’s governorship election in Lagos State lose the polls, whom between the Igbos and ORIJIN should end up in the Lagoon floor? Who between Oba Rilwan Akiolu and ORIJIN should be blamed? These are some of the questions bugging the minds of APC party leaders, loyalists and political analysts in the aftermath of the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu’s slip in the build up to the election.
Observers reasoned that the traditional ruler who has been receiving knocks from all corners since his unfortunate outburst against the Igbos during which he threatened the Igbo community in Lagos with drowning in the Lagos Lagoon if any of them dare to vote against Mr. Ambode whom he described as ‘his candidate’ in the election, will not be entirely blamed if it happens that APC lose control of Lagos State. Many argued that ORIJIN, a brand of herbal mixture from the stables of Guinness Nigeria Plc. should bear the larger chunk of the blame.
In what many regarded as rather hilarious twist of an intricate plot and theatre of the absurd, a contrite Oba Akiolu issued a personal statement of apology to the Igbo community and explain what led to that unfortunate incident. The traditional ruler who (against age-long Yoruba custom and tradition which sees the Oba (King) as second only to the gods and therefore, can do no wrong and owes no mortal any apology) repeatedly begged the Igbos to forgive him and went on to disclose that he was actually under the influence of heavy alcohol contained in the beverage (ORIJIN) he inadvertently drank before the meeting.
According to Oba Akiolu, “I was drunk. I was drinking some Orijin just before the meeting. It was my 1st time, it was so sweet, I did not know it would be so intoxicating.”
The Oba humbled himself by offering unalloyed apologies “I want to offer my unequivocal apologies to the Igbo people for the things I said. I am sorry.”
Though Oba Akiolu could no longer take back his slip, he has tough words for the alcoholic drink that led him into the mess. “I have ordered that all Orijin Bottles and Cans should be thrown into the Lagoon Instead”.
