Overwhelmed? Let God Lead You To A Higher Rock

There are times when the heart gets overwhelmed. The issues of life keep tumbling in, one after the other. Just when you think that you have settled one issue and you want to take a breath, another issue surfaces. Your bills may be mounting and there is not enough money. Your relationship with a loved one may be getting more difficult. Commuting to work may be a challenge. People may misunderstand you.

These challenges of life have a way of weighing the heart down. I have experienced bouts of overwhelming situations frequently in recent times. Sometimes, I am just tired. Add the everyday challenges to the growing uncertainties in Nigeria and globally, and you may understand why depression is a growing mental health issue that threatens us more than we accept.

When you are overwhelmed, crying out your frustration to God is always a good option. King David was a man who fought many battles in his life and experienced frequent low times. He was however a man who also recovered from his discouraged moods very quickly because he often turned to God for succour.

Three things are helpful always as revealed by David’s song – Psalms 61 – worship, praise and God’s word. Worship helps us magnify God beyond everyone and all things and enthrone Him as Lord the Almighty. Praise lifts the soul up as we thank God for who He is and for what He has done. The word of God—both the written and revealed word—testify to God’s faithfulness and remind us of our inheritance as children of God. These when combined, feed our faith and starve our fears.

Hear verses 1 and 2 of Psalms 61:

Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer. From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

David must have felt distant from God for him to believe he was crying from the end of the earth to God. The challenges of life had taken over his being and overpowered him. He needed help so he cried out in frustration to the only one He was sure could help. He wanted to be pulled out and up.

As human beings, events of life often surprise us, and we become confused and overwhelmed. It is not so with God. Nothing catches the owner of the Heavens and earth by surprise. God is above and over all. He is the Alpha and the Omega. The One who knows the end from the beginning. Allow Him to lead you to a higher ground in the spiritual realm where you may see what He sees, become assured that all things are under control and you will be just fine.
