Panic erupted on Wednesday morning near Ahmadu Bello University, along the Zaria–Sokoto highway, after a moving trailer unknowingly dropped a bag containing live bullets.
The bag of ammunition was said to have slipped off a vehicle that had passed through the area while heavily loaded, and the driver did not realise that the bag had fallen.
Eyewitnesses, whose voices were heard in a video clip shared online on Wednesday, said the bag was found on the highway near the university’s fence, a spot where students and travellers usually board vehicles heading north.
One person in the video said, “Asalama Ailaikum, people. It was in a certain car that drove through this route. The driver didn’t know that the bullet bag had fallen.”
Another voice explained that the vehicle appeared to be overloaded. “The car was filled with loads,” the voice said.
As tension grew, residents warned people nearby not to touch the bag, especially because of rising concerns about terrorism, banditry, and mass kidnapping in the region.
One source added, “Perhaps it is late before the content was discovered to be bullets,” and further warned in Hausa-accented English, “Don’t touch it!”
