
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Usman Alkali Baba, on Saturday, directed the Lagos State Police Commissioner to immediately arrest Afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti for allegedly assaulting a police officer on duty in the state
Kuti, the Grammy-nominated afrobeat singer was captured in a viral video assaulting a police operative in uniform.
A terse statement by the Nigeria Police Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, equally ordered a “speedy and full investigation into the remote and immediate causes of the assault and prosecution of the suspect accordingly.”
The statement reads: “IGP Usman Alkali Baba assures Nigerians that acts of contempt/disdain for symbols of authority will not be tolerated while offenders of such hideous crimes will be surely brought to book.”
Earlier, while reacting to the incident via his Twitter handle on the incident, the police spokesperson described Kuti’s action as “unbelievable”.
Quoting a tweet of a concerned citizen who called his attention to the matter, Adejobi said such situations happen for people to learn lessons.
“Seun’s Attack: The NPF will speak to this incident very soon. It’s unbelievable, but such happens for people to learn lessons. We shall be back.” Adejobi wrote.
Reacting to the order for his arrest by the Police IG via his Instastory late on Saturday night, Kuti said he welcomed the investigation. “I welcome the investigation and will give my full cooperation! I also pray to the IG that whoever is wrong should be indicted,” he wrote.
Meanwhile, Kuti has revealed why he slapped a police officer in a viral video via his Instastory late on Saturday night, saying the officer attempted to kill him and his family members.
The Afrobeat singer, who said the policeman has apologized and he has forgiven him, warned those saying he was chasing clout to mind their business and not let the police officer lose his job.
“He tried to kill me and my family. I have the proof but I no dey chase clout. He has apologised and I have agreed not to press charges. Make una mind una business make the poor guy no lose him job,” [sic].” Kuti wrote.
