President Bola Tinubu will formally swear in Olatunji Disu as Nigeria’s substantive Inspector-General of Police today, following the Nigeria Police Council’s unanimous endorsement of the nomination.
The swearing-in ceremony will take place during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting scheduled for the same day.
“The swearing-in ceremony will take place during the Federal Executive Council meeting scheduled for the same day,” the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said in a statement on Monday.
The council meeting, held at the State House Abuja, was presided over by President Tinubu and attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, state governors and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, retired DIG Hashimu Argungu.
Other top government officials present included the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu; Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila; Minister of Police Affairs Ibrahim Gaidam; Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike; and Head of Service Esther Walson-Jack.
According to Onanuga, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Governor of Lagos State, spoke glowingly about Disu, praising his service during his tenure as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos between 2015 and 2021.
Sanwo-Olu noted that Disu earned recognition for excellence in crime control during the period.
Similarly, the Governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Sule, commended the President’s decision, stating that Disu’s appointment was based on his impressive professional record.
Wike also praised the police chief’s professionalism, recalling his service in Rivers State as Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department and the anti-kidnapping unit between 2014 and 2015.
Disu’s confirmation comes barely a week after President Tinubu appointed him acting IGP following the resignation of former police chief Kayode Egbetokun.
Disu, 59, was born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos State and joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police.
He holds qualifications in public administration, forensic investigation, criminology, security, legal psychology and entrepreneurship – credentials the Presidency says reflect his commitment to modern, knowledge-driven policing.
Before his elevation, Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Special Protection Unit and the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Lagos.
Like his predecessor, Disu also served during Tinubu’s tenure as Governor of Lagos State between 1999 and 2007.
While Egbetokun was the Chief Security Officer to the governor, Disu served as his Aide-de-Camp.
