Presidential Poll: Afenifere, Four Political Parties Endorse Atiku Abubakar

Pan Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, and four political parties have endorsed the candidature of former Vice President of Nigeria who is also the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar in this Saturday’s presidential election as their candidate for the election.

The four political parties are Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), Alliance for Democracy (AD), Action Democratic Party (ADP) and Social Democratic Party (SDP).

The endorsement of Abubakar which took place at a program tagged “Afenifere Town Hall Meeting on Moving Nigeria forward” held in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital was organised by the  Afenifere led by Chief Reuben Fasoranti.

It could be recalled that a faction of the group led by Chief Ayo Fasanmi had on Tuesday, 29th January this year, in the same Ibadan, endorsed the candidate of President Muhammadu Buhari, claiming that Buhari had perform well and he deserved another term in the office.

But, the group led by Chief Fasoranti said that they had decided to endorse Abubakar because of his resolve to restructure Nigeria.

Eminent Yoruba leaders and elders present at the event held on Wednesday apart from Chief Fasoranti are; former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Chief Olu Falae, Senator Femi Okunrounmu, Chief Ayo Adebanjo and gubernatorial candidate of the PDP, Mr. Seyi Makinde who represented Abubakar at the event.

After the exhaustive deliberation, the meeting resolved as follows in its communique, “The way the country is presently constituted politically and geographically does not allow for people-oriented governance. This is because the structure of the country is prone to being run in a unitary rather than in a federal manner as envisioned by the country founding fathers”.

The meeting also took notice of various constitutions and various forms of government that the country has ran and came to the painful conclusion that the structure of the country was mainly responsible for the travails that the country has been experiencing socially, economically and more importantly in the political arena.

“In view of what is said in I and II, the meeting is convinced that the only panacea is for the country to be restructured. Afenifere has been advocating for restructuring for some time. Our position and the type of restructuring we have in mind were encapsulated in the document we made public at the summit we held in Ibadan in July 2017.

“We have watched and listened to various candidates vying for the position of President in the election to be held on Saturday Feb 16, 2019. We realised that it is only the presidential candidate of the PDP Alhaji Atiku Abubakar that has irrevocably committed himself to restructure the country on becoming the president of the country.

“We take note of the fact that Abubakar is the not a new convert to the principle of restructuring. He has been at the forefront of campaign for restructuring for upward of eight years.

“In view of the foregoing Afenifere hereby endorsed the Waziri Adamawa, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as the candidate all Yoruba people should vote for at the Saturday election. We believe that his presidency will be of immense benefit not only to Yoruba land but to the country as a whole”.
