The Presidential Election Petition Court on Monday threw out applications for live coverage of court proceedings.
The Chairman of the Presidential Election Petition Court, Justice Haruna Tsammani, gave the tribunal’s verdict, following formal requests for live coverage of the court’s sittings by Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi.
The Presidential Tribunal had said last week that from today, Monday, it would disallow phones and gadgets at the venue.
The message was posted at the entrance on Saturday 20th May 2023.
The warning at the Court of Appeal in Abuja reads: “Starting from Monday 22nd May 2023, no Phones or Gadgets would be allowed into the Courtroom.”
Justice Tsammani said the tribunal found no merit in applications by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP) and their presidential candidates Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and Mr. Peter Obi, respectively
At the proceeding in Abuja on Monday, Justice Tsammani said the litigants’ application lacked merit.
PDP and Atiku had filed an application on May 8 for an order to allow the live coverage of the daily court proceedings on the case they brought against the President-Elect, Bola Tinubu, following the February 25 election.
LP and Peter Obi followed suit with a similar application asking that proceedings of the tribunal be televised.
However, a week later, Tinubu wrote a contrary opinion to request for a live broadcast of the proceedings of the election petition, describing it as an abuse of court process.
