Rema Beats Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido, Others To Win Inaugural Afrobeats Awards At MTV VMA’s

Nigerian afrobeat artist signed under Jonzing Records and Mavins Records, Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has won the inaugural afrobeats awards at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs).

The young superstar won the award that has strong nominees like Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido, Ayra Starr, Asake, and Fireboy DML.

He becomes the first artist to win the category award, and he won it with his hit song Calm Down remix with Selena Gomez.

MTV’s VMAS returned to the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, on Tuesday’s night (September 12), honouring some of the biggest names in the Top 40 arena.

Rema, during his acceptance speech, appreciated pioneers and trailblazers like the late Fela Kuti, Don Jazzy and D’Prince (his label boss), Tuface Idibia, D’Banj, Wizkid, Davido and Burna Boy for paving the way for artist like himself.

He also urged his contemporary Afrobeats new act (usually refered to as the new cats) to keep up the flame just like his role models have done in the past to open more doors for incoming acts.

The award-winning song recently joined the billion stream club on Spotify, becoming the first African song to achieve such a feat.

However, Rema is not the first African act to win a VMA award, Wizkid was the first to win it in 2021.
