The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has declared its intention to begin an open-ended, full-scale strike by midnight on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, citing the Federal Government’s alleged move to suspend the Professional Allowance Table (PAT).
The association said the move follows concerns that the government is planning to discontinue the implementation of the allowance structure earlier agreed upon after the 2025 strike.
NARD had secured a revised Professional Allowance Table, which includes improved call duty, shift, non-clinical, and rural posting allowances, with implementation initially scheduled for January 2026.
Although implementation began in February, the association alleged that the government now intends to stop the process in April.
In a statement titled “FG Drags NARD to Another Avoidable Strike,” issued at the end of its virtual Extraordinary National Executive Council (e-NEC) meeting held on April 4, 2026, NARD Secretary-General, Dr Shuaibu Ibrahim, described the development as unfortunate and avoidable.
He called for the immediate reversal of the decision to suspend the PAT implementation.
The association also demanded the payment of promotion arrears and outstanding salary arrears in affected centres, as well as the prompt conclusion of the process for the 2026 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF).
NARD further insisted on the immediate processing and payment of 19 months’ outstanding arrears of the Professional Allowance.
The association urged its members nationwide to remain united, stressing its resolve to pursue the matter to a logical conclusion.
