Rivers: Fubara Speaks After Suspension

In response to his suspension by President Bola Tinubu, Siminalayi Fubara has addressed the public in a statement he signed, urging calm and promising to work with all relevant institutions to safeguard the state’s democracy and ensure its continued prosperity.

A press statement by Fubara, saw the suspended governor accusing members of the state Assembly, who are loyal to the FCT Minister, Wike, of frustrating his efforts to obey to the Supreme Court’s judgement.

In the statement, Fubara said, “My dear Rivers People, today, I speak to you with a sense of responsibility and composure as we face this challenging moment in our state’s political history.”

“As your governor, I have always acted in line with my constitutional oath and a deep sense of duty. From day one, our focus has been on ensuring the protection of lives, securing our state, and ensuring progress for Rivers. Even amidst political challenges, we have remained committed to upholding constitutional order and the rule of law, always placing the interests of our people first.”

He continued, “After the President’s intervention, we moved quickly to implement the peace agreement, including the reintegration of commissioners who had previously resigned voluntarily. We also acted promptly to comply with the Supreme Court’s judgment upon receiving the certified true copy of the ruling, in a bid to restore normalcy to our state.”

“These actions were not made with any personal interests but to ensure peace, unity, and stability in Rivers. Unfortunately, at every step, the Rivers State House of Assembly members, aligned with Wike, hindered our efforts, making it difficult to achieve genuine peace and progress.”

Fubara further emphasized, “Our priorities have remained clear—safeguarding lives and property, advancing the welfare of our people, and promoting the prosperity of our state. 

Despite political differences, governance has continued smoothly, salaries have been paid, and key projects are underway to move Rivers forward. Above all, our state remains safe, secure, and peaceful under our leadership.”

At this pivotal moment, the governor appealed for peace, urging all Rivers people to remain calm and law-abiding.

“We will continue engaging with the necessary institutions to ensure the strength of our democracy and the continued success of Rivers State,” he said. 

“We are a resilient people, and we will navigate this situation with wisdom, patience, and a steadfast commitment to the democratic process.”
