A tragic incident occurred during a football match in Peru, where a player lost his life after being struck by lightning.
Jose Hugo de la Cruz Meza, a 39-year-old player, was instantly killed when lightning struck the field during a regional tournament in Chilca.
Several other players were injured in the incident, including goalkeeper Juan Chocca Llacta, who suffered serious burns.
According to a report by one Mario Nawfal on X (formerly Twitter), two teenagers involved in the unfortunate event also suffered injuries.
“Jose Hugo de la Cruz Meza, 39, was killed instantly, and 5 players were injured during a regional tournament in Chilca. Goalkeeper Juan Chocca Llacta, 40, also received a direct strike and was rushed to hospital in a taxi with serious burns to his body.
“The other casualties, two teenagers aged 16 and 19 and a 24-year-old, were said to be in a stable condition,” he posted.

This is not the first time that a football player has lost his life due to lightning strikes. In Indonesia, a footballer was struck and killed in a similar incident in 2023. One Mustapha Bello was also killed in similar fashion in Nigeria.
