Porto striker Samu Omorodion, who was on the verge of joining Chelsea during the summer transfer window, believes external factors prevented his move to Stamford Bridge.
The 20-year-old forward had been widely tipped to complete a £34 million transfer from Atletico Madrid, with an agreement in place before concerns over an ankle injury caused the deal to collapse.
Instead, Omorodion secured a move to Portuguese giants FC Porto, where he has enjoyed a strong start, scoring seven goals in as many games, including a brace in a thrilling 3-3 draw against Manchester United.
Reflecting on the failed Chelsea transfer, the Spain Under-21 international shared his perspective, attributing the outcome to divine intervention.
“I had a very difficult summer. We had a really bad time because in the end everyone knows that I was close to signing, but it’s true that if it didn’t happen, it was for a reason, because God didn’t want it,” Samu Omorodion told Spanish outlet RTVE.
He expressed gratitude to Porto for offering him an opportunity during a challenging period.
“I’m also very grateful to Porto for giving me the opportunity when things looked at their worst, and I’m very happy with where I am now. I’ve left the past behind and now I’m focused on what’s coming to me,“ he added.
Standing 6ft 4ins tall, Omorodion, born to Nigerian parents, moved to Seville from Melilla at a young age.
He developed his skills with Sevilla and Nervion at the youth level before joining Granada in 2021, making his debut for their reserve team in March 2022 at the age of 17.
