Human rights activist and prominent activist Omoyele Sowore has been chosen as the African Action Congress (AAC) flagbearer ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Sowore was declared winner during the party’s presidential primary held on Tuesday in Abuja.
He emerged after receiving unanimous endorsement from delegates and party leaders present at the exercise.
Following his emergence, Sowore was presented with the party’s flag in celebration of his victory at the primaries.
Supporters and delegates at the venue reportedly welcomed the announcement with cheers and applause.
Speaking after accepting the nomination, Sowore said the AAC was founded to pursue the vision of building a new Nigeria.
He thanked delegates from across the country for what he described as their sacrifice, perseverance and commitment to the party’s ideals.
According to him, the party remains committed to confronting corruption, insecurity, bad governance and economic hardship affecting Nigerians.
The AAC primary attracted party members and delegates from different parts of the country as political parties continue preparations for the 2027 elections.
Sowore’s arrival at the venue was greeted by supporters who praised his activism and advocacy on governance, accountability and social justice.
Before the primary, Sowore had publicly confirmed his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election.
During an interview on Politics Today on Channels Television, he said Nigeria needed a complete departure from what he described as the “same failed political class.”
When asked if he would run again, he responded: “Yes. We have our party primaries next week.”
However, he maintained at the time that the final decision on the party’s candidate would rest with delegates and party members participating in the primary process.
