Speaker Obasa Hints At Lagos Governorship Race, Says ‘Every Politician Has Ambition’

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has confirmed he is considering various possibilities beyond his current position, including a potential gubernatorial bid.

Obasa, who recently survived a political storm that briefly saw him removed as Speaker, revealed this in an interview with Television Continental on Thursday.

When reminded of his earlier comment that his next move after the Assembly would be either the Senate or the governorship, Obasa explained that his statement at the time was not definitive.

“That was seven years ago, and it wasn’t assertive,” he said.

He, however, acknowledged that ambition is natural in politics.

“Every politician has ambition. On your own, you may aspire to become something, but politics is structured. You have to be a member of a political party, and if you are, then you must respect the leadership of that party,” Obasa noted.

The Speaker stressed that his political future lies with party leaders who, he said, would decide the direction of succession in Lagos.

“You get to a stage where you cannot determine what is next for you. If you have respect for the party and the way the party is being managed, you know that the leaders will sit together and decide who will be next. It’s all about consultation and engagement,” he explained.

Obasa, who has served as councillor and multiple-term lawmaker before rising to Speaker, did not dismiss the idea of seeking higher office.

When asked if he might extend his stay in the Assembly for another four years, he responded: “Not really.”

The Speaker’s remarks come amid speculation about potential successors to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in 2027, with observers suggesting Obasa could be among those positioning themselves for the state’s top job.
