The member representing Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency of Benue State in the House of Representatives, Hon. Francis Ottah Agbo, has urged the Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, and his deputy, Ibrahim Wase, to continue dialoguing in the quest for the speakership.
The lawmaker was reacting to the recent drama in the House where the Deputy Speaker appeared to be “challenging” the Speaker.
Agbo said the ongoing tension in the House of Representatives precipitated by the scramble for Speakership was not good for the House as the country is relying on the legislature to redeem it from the oblivion it has been subjected to in the last five years.
He said if the Speaker and his Deputy must disagree, they should do so constructively.
He stated this in a Facebook post on Wednesday.
Agbo said, “Before June 13, 2023, the 9th National Assembly will come to an end. What has a beginning must have an end.
“I look forward to a 10th Assembly which will consolidate the gargantuan gains recorded by the outgoing House in which I am privileged to chair its Narcotic Drugs Committee as well as serving as the Spokesman of its Minority Caucus! I can not take this for granted more so that these responsibilities fell on me as a first term Member of Parliament!
“The ongoing tension in the House of Representatives precipitated by the scramble for the coveted Speakership Diadem must be quickly put to rest.
“It is against this background that I enjoin Mr. Speaker and his deputy to dialogue and not to be tired of dialoguing for no dialogue is too much. And if they must disagree; they should do so constructively, they should disagree to agree without being dis-agreeable for we are in Parliament to selflessly serve Nigeria and not ourselves!
“Like I have always said in the last five years, the soul of this country called Nigeria is fast going into oblivion and it is the bounden responsibility of Parliament to, in concert with the other arms of government, to redeem our country.
“The current 9th Assembly has done well and is doing so much to salvage the country and will continue to do so until the 10th Assembly is inaugurated. The 10th Assembly must continue from where we shall stop in order to halt the drifting of our fatherland!”
Rep. Agbo will not be returning to the National Assembly having lost out to Barr. Aide Nath Ogwuche at the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, primaries. His opponent also lost out to Philip Agbese of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the general elections.
